スペリングが「oe」の場合、どう発音しますか？ローマ字だと「オエ」ですが、英語はそうじゃなさそうですよね。
英語の場合、toe /təʊ/, shoe /ʃu:/のように、/əʊ/か/u:/と発音する場合が多く、日本人にもおなじみな単語でもよく出てきます。
では、同じ「oe」でも、phoenix、 Phoebe 、Oedipusはどうでしょう？
この3つは、ラテン語から来ている単語・人名で、発音記号で書くと：
phoenix /ˈfi:nɪks/
Phoebe /ˈfi:bi:/
Oedipus /ˈi:dəpəs/ (アメリカ英語は/ˈedɪpəs/)
となり、「oe」の部分は、/i:/と発音します。
英語は、ラテン語だけではなく、フランス語、ドイツ語、ギリシャ語などから来た単語も多いので、同じスペリングでも色々な発音方法があります。
また、長い年月の間にスペリングや発音が変わったなど、見た目と発音がしっくりこない理由は様々です。
英語の発音のルールを知れば、こう読むのかな？というGuessは当たりやすくはなりますが、「この文字は絶対こう発音する」というものはめったにありません。
