私はカラオケなど人前で歌うのは苦手なのですが、歌を聞く時に一緒に口ずさむのは大好きです。父の影響で小学校4年生くらいから、洋楽を聞き始め、学校でローマ字を習ってからは、歌詞カードを見ながら、真似して一緒に歌うようになりました。かなりデタラメで、意味も分っていませんでしたが、英語で歌っている気分が嬉しかったのを覚えています。
英語の歌を歌うと、英語のリズムや、リンキングなどのConnected speech、そしてWeak formも使うことになるので、自然に英語らしい英語が頭に入っていきます。息を止めずに英語を発音する事にもなりますし、リスニングにも役立ち、新しい単語を覚えることもでき、一石三鳥以上の効果があります。
そこで、ここでは、季節がらクリスマス・ソングを一緒に口ずさむ事を目指し、歌詞のどこでリンキングがおこるか？などを考えていきます。
英語圏でも日本でも必ず人気のクリスマス・ソングの上位にランキングされているのが、Wham!の「Last Christmas」とマライア・キャリーの「All I want for Christmas is you」。どちらもお馴染みな曲だと思いますが、イギリス人という事で、Wham!を選びました。
歌詞を載せますので、前後が子音の/t/, /d/が発音されない部分はどこか？Weak formは使われているか？リンキングは？など、まずは、自分で考えてから聞いてみてもいいと思います。
または、歌詞を見ながら聞いて、ここで音が消えているなど気づいてみてもいいですし、あまり何も気にせず、歌詞を見ながら歌ってみるだけでもOKです。
一つ気をつけたいのが、歌は会話に比べ、子音（特に破裂音）を弱めに発音する傾向があるということです。感情を込めて歌う場合はその傾向が特に強くなります。これは、子音が耳障りになる場合があるのと、感情は母音の部分で表すから、などの理由からです。
